Sea-Level Rise: From Global Perspectives to Local Services

چکیده
Coastal areas are highly diverse, ecologically rich, regions of key socio-economic activity, and particularly sensitive to sea-level change. Over most the 20th century, global mean sea level has risen mainly due warming subsequent expansion upper ocean layers as well melting glaciers ice caps. last three decades, increased mass loss Greenland Antarctic sheets also started contribute significantly contemporary rise. The future two sheets, which combined represent a rise potential ∼65 m, constitutes main source uncertainty in long-term (centennial millennial) projections. Improved knowledge magnitude rate change is therefore utmost importance. Moreover, does not uniformly across globe can differ greatly at both regional local scales. appropriate feasible mitigation adaptation measures coastal strongly depend on land use associated risk aversion. Here, we advocate that addressing problem its impacts requires (i) bringing together transdisciplinary scientific community, from climate cryospheric scientists impact specialists, (ii) interacting closely iteratively with users stakeholders co-design co-build services, including high-end risks.

GIS Analysis of Global Impacts from Sea Level Rise
Future sea level rise caused by climate change would disrupt the physical processes, economic activities, and social systems in coastal regions. Based on a hypothetical global sea level increase of one to six meters, we developed GIS methods to assess and visualize the global impacts of potential inundation using the best available global datasets. After susceptible areas were delineated, we es...
متن کاملRapid accumulation of committed sea-level rise from global warming.
As carbon emissions and scientific research have accumulated over recent years, climate scientists have come to see global climate change as an increasingly urgent threat (1, 2). In PNAS, Levermann et al. (3) provide a powerful new indicator of danger. When their findings on the long-term sensitivity of global sea level to global warming (∼2.3 m/°C) are put in the context of recent research on ...
متن کاملAccelerated sea-level rise from West Antarctica.
Recent aircraft and satellite laser altimeter surveys of the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica show that local glaciers are discharging about 250 cubic kilometers of ice per year to the ocean, almost 60% more than is accumulated within their catchment basins. This discharge is sufficient to raise sea level by more than 0.2 millimeters per year. Glacier thinning rates near the coast during ...
متن کاملContemporary sea level rise.
Measuring sea level change and understanding its causes has considerably improved in the recent years, essentially because new in situ and remote sensing observations have become available. Here we report on most recent results on contemporary sea level rise. We first present sea level observations from tide gauges over the twentieth century and from satellite altimetry since the early 1990s. W...
متن کاملA 20th century acceleration in global sea-level rise
[1] Multi-century sea-level records and climate models indicate an acceleration of sea-level rise, but no 20th century acceleration has previously been detected. A reconstruction of global sea level using tide-gauge data from 1950 to 2000 indicates a larger rate of rise after 1993 and other periods of rapid sea-level rise but no significant acceleration over this period. Here, we extend the rec...
